I'm at a D3 college right now. I came from a very competetive hight school (as far as tennis), and played varsity all four years.
I've gone out and hit with the team many times, and would probably be in the middle of the lineup. It's also a very competitive college for tennis, even though it's just D3. I know some other D3 colleges where I'd be put straight into the top position. (i'm not playing on the team because of schedule conflicts with my major - eduacation before recreation).
Just get as good as you possibly can. Just know that the schools won't be openly recruiting you, because of the whole no-scholarship thing. Make sure when you visit colleges that you talk to the coach, and get to know him/her. And also realize that tennis will pretty much consume your life during the season, and you'll always have something to do for it during the off-season (conditioning, lifting, etc). It's a big commitment, but it would be a lot of fun.
